A person might use facial expressions, gestures, signs, writing, picture or letter boards, a speech-generating device, or a combination. Someone may use speech and AAC in different situations. AAC is communication; a person does not need to use one particular tool or speak aloud for their message to count.

What does communication access look like at home and school?

Communication access means that a person can share ideas, ask questions, make choices, refuse, learn, and take part with the communication methods they use. Families and school teams can make time to listen, keep the person’s familiar communication methods available, allow time to respond, and acknowledge messages in any form. These are general practices; the person and their existing team can identify what fits their situation.

What practical strategies can families try during everyday routines?

When a communication board or device is already part of a person’s day, keep it accessible during routines such as meals, play, and outings. Talk naturally while pointing to a few relevant words if that is part of the person’s established approach, pause to leave room for a response, and accept communication through speech, movement, signs, pictures, or a device. Avoid turning every interaction into a test or requiring a particular response before honoring a choice. Bring questions to the person’s existing school or communication team.

What can teachers do to support communication access in class?

Keep the student’s usual communication methods available and ready to use throughout instruction, transitions, group work, and less-structured activities. Allow extra response time, model useful words while speaking without requiring the student to copy, and offer more than one way to participate. Share agreed routines with other adults who support the student, including substitutes, and coordinate questions with the student’s existing team.

Pause and show that you are listening. Give the person time, then use their familiar way to clarify if one is known; this might include a simple question, a yes-or-no choice, or offering a few possible meanings.
